Some heart attacks are sudden and intense, but most heart attacks start slowly with mild pain or discomfort. Often times, people aren't aware what is wrong and wait before seeking medical attention. Here are signs that can mean a heart attack is occurring:
- Uncomfortable pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes
- Pain may spread to the shoulders, neck or arms
- Chest discomfort with lightheadedness, fainting, sweating, nausea or shortness of breath
- Women tend to suffer milder symptoms, including shortness of breath and neck aches instead of the more familiar chest pains
